And Still We Rise, written by Miles Corwin is a non-fiction text based on twelve gifted inner-city students and the challenges they faced and overcame before graduating. These twelve students faced many obstacles; obstacles that if many of us came across, would make us want to give up.They faced many family, financial, and social issues. By using statistics and facts in this chunk, Corwin describes Prop 209 on Affirmative Action and how the outcome will affect minorities when applying for colleges and universities. He also introduces four new students and the problems they are currently facing as well as reminiscing on characters previously discussed; the three new characters introduced are Sabreen, Claudia,Curt, and Latisha. Corwin also describes and discusses South Central by using imagery and statistics; he also discussed the never ending battle between Miss Little and Moultrie.
*Discussion Question:
Clarification: Why and how did the battle between Miss Little and Moultrie begin?
Does a certain way/style of teaching have a greater affect in the way a student learns? If so why?
Application: How does the medias negative outlook on minorities and South Central affect the way society thinks?
Style:Does Corwin's understanding and compassionate tone towards these students and their obstacles help one feel more for them and their troubles?

Clarification: There is a constant battle between Ms.Little and Ms.Moultrie because Ms.Moultrie is the English Department chairwoman and Ms.Little feels she is better qualified. Also Ms.Little does not like how Ms.Moultrie teaches. She feels Ms.Moultrie assigns work that does not suit the curriculum and does not continue to apply what has been taught the previous year, and then Ms.Little has to reteach it.
ReplyDeleteApplication: The way the media talks about minority students causes society to think little of these sudents and view them as low lives who don't take school seriously and only care about being in the streets. Society begins to think that minority students are only involved in gangs, drugs, and violence. So when minority students are outside of their neighborhood, others take them as being dangerous and they try to avoid them. For those who care about South-Central students, they want to help and see the good these students are trying to do but aren't getting recognized for.
clarification: The battle began between ms.little. and ms. moultrie when ms.moultrie was hired by braxton and was named board of english department which was ms.littles title. Ms. little got mad and thats when the fued began.
ReplyDeleteapplication: The media always look down on the low class minority students. They never give them the benefit of the doubt on what struggles and trials they face through everyday and still be a stronger person then what the media shows them to be. The media makes every one society thinks that a "somebody" cant come out the hood and become something big. The media make it to believe that the people still living in the hood and the people who get out of the hood are rappers, or basketball players. They never think that a doctor, or a lawyer can come out the hood. And with Miles Corwin, he shines the light on the=ose who can become success in life.
Style: I believe that the retelling of these students' lives alone would make someone feel sympathy or compassion for them. He's just telling what happened and how he played in, so it makes people see that these students need someone to be there and listen.
